Aqiqah project Learn more

The aqiqah is sunnah and mustahabb; it is not obligatory at all, so there is no sin on the one who does not do it

"(The righteous are those) who feed the poor, the orphan and the captive for the love of God, saying: We feed you for the sake of God Alone; we seek from you neither reward nor thanks." (Quran, 76:8-9)

It is Sunnah to shave the head of the newborn on the seventh day after birth, give them an Islamic name and also sacrifice an animal. The shaved hair of the baby is weighed and the equivalent weight in silver or gold given to charity (this can easily be done by visiting a goldsmith). It is Sunnah to sacrifice a goat/sheep for a girl and two animals for a boy. The meat should be distributed between family, friends, and those who are in need. This whole process is called Aqiqah. Mother of the Mumeens, Sayyida Aisha (RA) narrated that the Prophet ? said: Slaughter two comparable sheep for a male newborn and one sheep for a female. [Tirmidhi]
